Atlas Terrian by JECBrush Atlas Terrian by JECBrush
A commission piece in the works for :iconfiel7d:~fiel7d featuring his OC, Atlas Terrian, flying over Corneria while standing on his ship's wing. I finally completed this one. Had to change a few things regarding the ship, but overall it looks pretty nice.

I dont want to be a buzz kill, but, using either a mag field generator or a H.V.G.P.S(High Velocity Gas Propulsion System) to accelerate a arrow or such would instantly incinerate the arrow! Unless of course it is made of a light weight alloy or such! (Sorry i just nerded out =P )

No worries! ^^

I assume the arrow is metallic to handle the discharge and heat. :)

Is that bow even plausible?

Dunno actually. :P

I guessing the arrow is drawn back which triggers the rail system to charge. Once the arrow and string is released, the magnetic field generated by the rail propels the arrow at amazing velocities at incredibly long distances.

Thanks! Fiel7d thought of the idea and I rolled with it. It turned out pretty good.

The cityscape is a fairly nice background and I believe it adds to the whole thing.

Thanks. :)

This is really lovely! I can't exactly pinpoint what I like about it, so I'll just say the overall effect. Although I'm not sure how he's able to stay on the wing with that giant weapon.

I have to ask though, how do you go about drawing ships?

JECBrush Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'm not sure how he is supposed to stay on either to be honest. :P But it was a requirement on the commission.

How I go about drawing ships?

First, I address what the ship is actually used for before drawing. What's its role? What can and can't do? Who is using that ship? Those kinds of questions usually establishes what it needs to do it's job and it helps me avoid adding things that detract from its intended design from freeform building to design with specific parameters.

I thumbnail sketch next and go through several iterations on paper. With one surviving design, I bring it into digital.

I first establish the perspective and then I go one of two ways that I know.

One, I build masses and shapes with a large brush to define the body.
-or-
Two, I sketch out with line weight in mind to build kind of like a wire-frame hull and fill it in later.

I make sure the inital work produces a silhouette that can be easily read and uniquely identified from a distance. I work with reference while building the image in greyscale to focus only on value. The colors and decals are added later and are the easiest to do. Post details and light effects are added last.

That's pretty much how I make ships.
