Owen Phoenix by JECBrush Owen Phoenix by JECBrush
This is part 2 commission for ~cha0sLeader featuring Owen Phoenix, Fara's father. He is a brilliant chief executive in the Space Dynamics Company, responsible for the creation of the Arwing, Great Fox, and more.

This is finally completed! Looks great to me, but I'm sure there's always room for improvement.

Drawing the necessary details for the Arwings is such a pain when Nintendo doesn't provide many different high-poly reference images of the ships.

Star Fox & Lylat Wars Nintendo

Edits:
4/30 - Swapped colors with vest and pants. Added more detail to clouds.
5/2 - Tightened up Mr. Phoenix's face and torso a bit. Changed his glasses and belt.
5/3 - Continued to refine Phoenix's look, esp. hands, belts, and slacks. Started to sharpen the Arwing's look
5/14 - Refined Arwings to a satisfactory level. Added more detail to Mr. Phoenix such as fur. Added booster FX.
5/16 - Added a candid-like pads on the hands per request.

Fennec paws are covered with fur, helps protect against hot sands and assist digging. Might want to work with that.

He looked so nerdy in the bowtie (*cough the comics cough*), I'd almost put him down as Aurelius.

Also, doesn't that little corporate entity of his have a different name? I'd have to look it up, naturally, but just in case.

Mr. Phoenix did look a little goofy in the comics. :P The commissioner and I took his concept and made him appear cooler and more dynamic.

As for the corporate entity, I just went by what was put down in Arwingpedia.

Ah, is that so? I'll have a look at that, then, and see if I can't deliver a deliciously eye-blistering rant for including fan work in canon information.

Either that, or I'll have learned a new thing, and given my fanaticism regarding Star Fox that's never bad.

Looking forward to it.

However according to the resource, there is no indication of who owns Space Dynamics. The commissioner has made the decision to have Mr. Phoenix as CEO in his fan fic.

According to the comics Mr Phoenix is known as the Starship Magnate, which would imply he does indeed own the company.

Wow. This is freakin' awesome.
Fara's dad looks like he's lost a little weight since his appearance in the original comic, but I LOVE the new look you've given him.

You can REALLY tell he's meant to be Fara's father. His clothes not only evoke Fara's traditional flight suit colour scheme, but the confident pose, along with the Arwings in the background (implying a close relationship with the vehicles across family members) make it very clear just who Fara took after.

My style doesn't use candid-like pads for any of the characters. Is it a bad thing that one doesn't include these?

Naw, I don't think so. It's really just a preference in an artistic standpoint. If you watch Disney's Robin Hood, there aren't any hand and feet pads. My OC's generally don't have them either.

The gearing between the G-Diffusers were tough as hell to draw. I still haven't really have the lightest clue how the gears attach to the body of the ship.

Wonderful! I loved this when you first posted it, and you just keep making it even better. Those Arwings look fabulous (and I don't even like the Assault style ships).

This is such an interesting interpretation of Mr. Phoenix. My vision of him has always been stuck around his one and only appearance in the comic where he looked short, somewhat chubby, and anything but energetic or formidable.

This young and ambitious looking Mr. Phoenix seems like a much more interesting and exiting character.

Should I ever stop making excuses and start working on the fan-comic I created this account for, it is very likely that this picture is going to influence how I choose to interpret the man in my story.

I love inspiring pictures. Great Job.

Thanks for your comment! ^^

I've always thought that the Arwings in Assault had more structural weaknesses especially on the "shoulders" of the fuselage where the twin guns and the G-Diffuser pods attached. The older model in SF64(3ds) looked more durable.

I like ~cha0sLeader's reinterpretation of Mr. Phoenix. Yes, he appears much more interesting this way!

The image is becoming pretty difficult to finish up though. The Assault arwing design is hard to render out because of my troubles finding helpful camera angles of the ship. Orthographic views (front, back, top, bottom, and sides) would help a great deal.

Once it is finished it should look great. I'm still tinkering with the background and I'm wondering if I could keep the motion blur.

I have the same problem with drawing fighters, making a comic requires that you know how to draw them in various different angles. Since I've already "mastered" drawing the characters I've been trying to perfect my ships and weapon designs. It's difficult, even with references to draw from.

I tried to compile the original "G27x-tex.doltex.tex" into maya or blender format, but it only ends with a bluescreen :/
Still, i tried to open it even with Dolphin emulator, but this one can handle only the full .iso image of the GC/Wii DVD.

Sorry, i tried but with no effect.

*smacks himself in the face* I need to practise texture unpacking more! *smacks again*

Oh, it's alright. If it is that much trouble to unpack the texture, then I can work with just the model. :P

I've just recently got started on a model of my interpretation of the Arwing on my Maya. I've also created numerous sketches of my OC's Arwing since the start of this year. I just haven't posted those yet.

The problem is, the GameCube ATI graphic processor renders polygons basing on the RAW(or something) data, packed into the shape_item.render inside the item_name-tex.doltex.tex, so it's almost impossible to convert the .render data to any pc/linux format... But dolphin emulator has the experimental "camera override" function, which grants you full control of the ROM's camera.

You could use this function. Of course, you need the .iso image of starfox assault...

And about our project:

Can you draw pretty much every Arwing version? We could show the evolution of the Arwing to mark V arwing...

JECBrush Featured By Owner May 17, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Hmm... I'm guessing it has to do with proprietary modeling software.

Well, I could always reinterpret the arwing via drawings and Maya. I don't think showing the evolution of the arwing is necessary in a diagram format, but we could present the arwings from different era's in our story when need be.
