Shamedwolf and Nora by JECBrush Shamedwolf and Nora by JECBrush
A request for :iconshamedwolf:~shamedwolf of his fursona and my OC Nora together in an alternate-alternate Star Fox universe. The story here is pretty basic.

At first it was going to be pretty much the first panel, but I felt that my line art skills could use some sharpening, so I drew a bunch of sketches and pieced them together on this page. It eventually turned into an attempt to create this manga-like page. That's why it took a while to throw this out here.

I hope you like it! :)

Oh, please give constructive critiques based on overall composition and direction of the piece. I would like some help on improving page assembly.

Aww, what a nice looking couple right here! From what I see, I think Nora seems to have some feelings towards him, and which he looks like he really cares about Nora, so this also means he also has feelings towards her which I find it quiet sweet and cute! :D

For Nora, it's the compounding stress bottled up inside and the death of a loved one to top it off.

And what's wrong with the critique system??? I can't see the deviation when I write a critique. :(

Oh Julius, this is page 13, so where's the other page???

You'd probably can get the attention of a dA admin in the Suggestions Forum and request a change in the critique system there.

The '13' in Page 13 is just an arbitrary number that was randomly chosen by a roll of a 20-sided dice. :P

Falco and Runner does the sniping.

Krystal and Andy does the cooking.

Fay does the talking, singing, eavesdropping, ambush hugging, electronic music making, and has a variety of odd quirks about her. :D

There are a couple things I would recommend to improve. Panel one, it's hard to tell which character is actually doing the talking. It might make it easier if you angle the "tail" of the speech bubble to match the angle of Nora's mouth. Secondly, the arrangement is confusing. Panel one through five are read from left to right, panels seven through nine are read right to left. It makes it very very confusing, either have it read from right to left or left to right through out the entire comicPersonally, I don't like an american made comic that is read from right to left, I say leave that to the Japanese. However, that is simply a matter of my personal taste and you are free to choose how you would like a comic to be read. The point I'm emphasizing is to be consistent; it makes it much easier to read. Here is a great example: [link] See how that even with complicated paneling and a very complex action scene the reader is still able to tell what's going on. Imagine now if the panels switched direction half-way through the page, it would make it almost impossible to read.

As for what I like about this piece. The expressions are absolutely incredible, you certainly draw a lot of emotions out of the characters during the conversation. The varying viewing angles keep the reader interested and keep the image from becoming stale. Aside from the fore mentioned issue, it was fairly easy to understand what was going on in the comic. You definitely seemed to have a good plan going into this page. You picked a perfect time to "break" the paneling, right as Nora is walking out on the character, very well done.

Okay,

1) Clearly define who is speaking.
2) Maintain consistent visual flow.

Got it.

When I was making this page, the flow ended up to guide the viewer from right to left, then left to right, and right to left like an 'S'. It was composing the last 3 frames were difficult because Nora walks past the guy, Shane, to the left. That was very confusing when I arranged the frames from left to right. :P

Retrospectively, I see this as a... pretty good piece. The composition needs tuning, but the expressions sell the story well.

Exactly.

I, personally, would describe it as better than "pretty good". Most comics you see on DA are very flat, without a lot of expression from the characters and it's very difficult to tell what's going on in them. Yours did a good bit of storytelling, even if it was just one page, I understood exactly what had happened in the "previous" 12 pages.
